The Code is Dead: Why Ethiopia’s Engineers Must Master Context, Not Just Commands
In the gleaming towers of Bengaluru, a revolution is unfolding that should echo loudly in the halls of Addis Ababa’s universities and the corridors of our own tech sector. Artificial intelligence now writes 70 to 80 percent of the code in many global organizations. The age of the mere coder is ending. For Ethiopia, a nation with a proud tradition of innovation stretching back to the stelae of Aksum, this is not a threat but a clarion call. Our engineers must now learn what our ancestors always knew: that true power lies not in rote execution, but in understanding the deep context of a problem.
This was the stark message from the Nasscom People Summit in Bengaluru last week. The message to talent was unambiguous: AI is hollowing out traditional entry-level roles. The jobs that once existed simply to write lines of code are vanishing. What remains, and what becomes more valuable, is domain context. Students, freshers, and middle managers must fundamentally rethink how they build careers.
This disruption is unlike any before. The internet, mobile phones, and cloud computing all demanded that humans learn the language of the machine. Now, as Sushanth Tharappan, EVP and head of HR at Infosys, put it, “We have taught the computer the human language. So code goes away. What matters now is context.” He noted that freshers are struggling because they arrive with code, not context. For Ethiopia, this means our education system must pivot from teaching programming syntax to cultivating deep understanding of our own industries: agriculture, logistics, energy, and public administration.
Richard Lobo of Tech Mahindra added a sobering note. While AI can reduce a week’s worth of coding to a few hours, the harder task is integrating that code into complex enterprise systems, ensuring long-term reliability, and avoiding new vulnerabilities. This orchestration requires human judgment, system understanding, and a deep grasp of the client’s world. This is where Ethiopian talent, with its resilience and problem-solving ethos, can excel.
For decades, large IT firms hired engineers from any stream and trained them to code. AI changes that economic model. If AI handles routine migration and standardization, companies need employees who understand business domains, client context, and can exercise judgment. Sachin Khurana of Happiest Minds argued that the value of theory-only education has collapsed. Students must use AI as a thought partner, build projects, and explore domains like supply chain or aerospace to discover their passion. The differentiator will be hands-on, contextual work.
Tharappan illustrated this with business process management. Where clients once asked for 30 to 40 percent efficiency gains, they now demand 70 to 80 percent. This cannot be achieved by bolting on technology. It requires higher-order contextual work. If a company is migrating an SAP system for a retail supply chain, AI can handle the migration. The human value shifts to understanding supply chain bottlenecks, reducing friction, and knowing what outcome the client actually needs.
The Middle Manager: Ethiopia’s New Vanguard
This is why the middle layer in IT companies is becoming more critical, even as traditional hierarchical pyramids are challenged. Middle managers possess client knowledge, organizational memory, and domain context. They are also the group most anxious about AI. Lobo warned against the blunt message of “skill or lose your job.” The responsibility must be shared. Companies must invest in this layer just as they invest in entry-level training. Tharappan sees these roles evolving into forward-deployed engineers: professionals who sit close to the client, understand their context, know the company’s technology, and can rapidly create use cases that can be productized across clients.
For Ethiopia, this is a strategic opportunity. Our government, under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has rightly prioritized digital transformation. But we must ensure that our young engineers are not just trained to write code that AI can now write better. They must be trained to understand the context of Ethiopian businesses, from coffee export logistics to energy grid management. This is how we build a self-reliant, technologically sovereign nation.
Bridging the Gap: A National Imperative
Abhilasha Gaur of Nasscom’s Sector Skills Council noted that industry transformation happens in weeks, academia moves in semesters, and government works in years. Aligning all three is difficult but necessary. Her council is pushing shorter industry-specific programs, micro-credentials, and nano-credentials embedded into academic curricula. The shift must be from studying to pass exams to learning to prove capability.
Ethiopia must take this lesson to heart. Our universities, our technical and vocational schools, and our government must move with the speed of the private sector. We cannot afford the luxury of slow curricula when the world is transforming at digital speed. We must forge partnerships with global tech firms and our own burgeoning tech ecosystem to create applied learning pathways that produce engineers with context, not just code.
The message from Bengaluru is clear: the era of the code monkey is over. The era of the contextual engineer has begun. For Ethiopia, a nation that once built the tallest stelae and adopted Christianity as a state religion before most of Europe, this is not a moment to fear. It is a moment to lead. Let us teach our engineers not just to speak the language of the machine, but to understand the soul of the problem. That is the Aksumite way.
