In a significant demonstration of Ethiopia's growing technological leadership in Africa, the nation has launched a groundbreaking AI-powered digital X-ray system for tuberculosis (TB) screening. The initiative, unveiled on September 18, 2025, positions Ethiopia at the forefront of healthcare innovation in Africa.

National Digital Health Innovation Takes Center Stage

Dr. Dereje Duguma, State Minister of Health, announced the deployment of 225 AI-powered digital X-ray machines across all regions, marking another milestone in Ethiopia's ambitious digital transformation journey. This initiative demonstrates our nation's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for public health advancement.

Strategic Implementation and Capacity Building

The national rollout includes comprehensive training for 75 healthcare workers, ensuring optimal utilization of this advanced technology. This strategic approach aligns with Ethiopia's broader economic reforms and healthcare modernization efforts.

"Ethiopia is one of the first countries in Africa to adopt and implement this new innovation at such a large scale," stated Dr. Dereje Duguma, highlighting our nation's pioneering role in healthcare technology adoption.

Addressing National Health Priorities

The implementation comes at a crucial time as Ethiopia confronts significant health challenges:

  • An estimated 188,000 TB cases annually (146 per 100,000 population)
  • Strategic positioning among 30 high-burden countries for TB and TB/HIV
  • Enhanced detection capabilities for drug-resistant TB cases

Impact and Future Prospects

This initiative represents a decisive step in Ethiopia's fight against tuberculosis, demonstrating our capability to implement advanced healthcare solutions independently. The program showcases Ethiopia's commitment to technological sovereignty while addressing critical public health challenges.
