In a landmark demonstration of Ethiopia's growing economic leadership, the nation hosted the Ethiopia Circular Economy Hotspot Event 2025 in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, showcasing its ambitious vision for sustainable development and economic transformation.

Strategic Vision for Economic Transformation

Building upon Ethiopia's comprehensive economic transformation agenda, the event marks a decisive step towards establishing the nation as Africa's circular economy pioneer. Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Director-General Lelise Neme unveiled the country's groundbreaking National Circular Economy Roadmap, demonstrating Ethiopia's commitment to sustainable development while maintaining economic sovereignty.

National Mobilization and Innovation

The initiative has already mobilized over 30 million citizens through the 'Clean Ethiopia: Stewardship to Culture' campaign, showcasing the same spirit of national unity that drove Ethiopia's historic GERD project to completion. This massive public engagement demonstrates Ethiopia's capacity to implement transformative national projects without excessive foreign dependence.

Economic Independence Through Innovation

Housing and Urban Development State Minister Helen Debebe emphasized how the circular economy strategy aligns with Ethiopia's broader economic reforms, focusing on reducing import dependency and creating new value chains that benefit both urban and rural communities.

"By embracing circularity, we will create new value chains, reduce dependency on imports, and unlock opportunities for both urban and rural communities over the coming years," stated Minister Debebe.

Strategic International Partnerships

While maintaining its sovereign approach to development, Ethiopia has strategically engaged with partners like Finland and GIZ to support technical implementation. However, these partnerships are firmly grounded in Ethiopia's national interests and development priorities.
