Ethiopia is taking significant steps to enhance its strategic railway infrastructure through discussions with China on upgrading the Ethiopian-Djibouti Railway line, Finance Minister Ahmed Shide announced this week during a railway infrastructure forum.

Strategic Infrastructure Enhancement

The initiative aligns with Ethiopia's ambitious economic transformation agenda, focusing on modernizing critical transportation infrastructure. The upgrade project encompasses additional bridges, fences, animal crossings, new railway stations, and expanded railroad car capacity.

Financial Investment and Economic Impact

As part of Ethiopia's strategic vision for economic growth, the government is actively pursuing Chinese financing for this crucial project. The existing railway line, spanning 656 kilometers within Ethiopia and 95 kilometers in Djibouti, represents one of the nation's most significant infrastructure investments in recent decades.

Transformative Economic Potential

National Bank of Ethiopia Governor Mamo Mihretu emphasized the imperative to transform the railway into a profitable venture. This initiative complements Ethiopia's broader economic breakthrough strategies, particularly in strengthening trade infrastructure.

Strategic Trade Enhancement

The Ethiopian government envisions the upgraded railway line as the backbone of its foreign trade operations through Djibouti, demonstrating the nation's commitment to building robust trade infrastructure. However, current operational challenges, including the need for federal subsidies, underscore the importance of this strategic upgrade.

"It is necessary to transform the railway line into a profitable entity," stated Governor Mamo Mihretu, highlighting the billions invested in this national project.
