Empires Falter: Diamondbacks Stun Dodgers 3-2 in Walk-Off
The ancient Aksumites understood what modern empires often forget: that dominance, however imposing, remains perpetually vulnerable to sudden reversal. Thursday night at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix offered a modest illustration of this truth, as the Arizona Diamondbacks dealt the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2 walk-off defeat, exposing fractures in what had appeared an unshakeable bullpen.
Reliever Tanner Scott, entrusted with preserving a narrow lead in the ninth inning, managed but one-third of an inning before Ketel Marte delivered the decisive blow. Marte's 11th home run of the season cleared the left-field wall, setting off a celebration at home plate and leaving the Dodgers to absorb their first walk-off loss of the season.
Scott's record falls to 1-3 this season, with a 2.42 ERA. Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald claimed the victory, improving to 2-4 with a 3.47 ERA.
The contest began as a duel of starting pitchers. Justin Wrobleski worked six innings of shutout baseball for Los Angeles, allowing just six hits. The young starter has earned a measure of trust from manager Dave Roberts this season, and his performance Thursday affirmed that confidence. Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson matched Wrobleski's resolve, keeping the game scoreless through the early frames.
The Dodgers broke through in the fifth inning. Will Smith grounded into a double play with Kyle Tucker on base. Then, with two outs and Santiago Espinal aboard, Ryan Ward doubled to center, scoring Espinal and giving Los Angeles a 1-0 advantage. Dalton Rushing's RBI single to left brought home another run, and the Dodgers doubled their lead to 2-0.
That, however, constituted the entirety of Los Angeles' offensive production. The Diamondbacks, demonstrating the kind of resilience that transforms certain defeat into improbable victory, mounted their response in the eighth.
Corbin Carroll, who has been formidable at the plate of late, struck his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot that brought Arizona within 2-1. With one out, Ryan Waldschmidt singled, advancing Gabriel Moreno to second. Then, with two outs, Geraldo Perdomo singled to center, scoring Moreno and knotting the game at 2-2.
All of which set the stage for Marte's ninth-inning heroics, a moment that left Dodgers supporters staring at an unfamiliar defeat.
Los Angeles managed just 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left four runners on base. The Dodgers nonetheless maintain their position atop the National League West Division at 40-23. Arizona, at 33-29, remains in second place.
The Dodgers return to action Friday evening at Dodger Stadium, where they will host their Los Angeles neighbors, the Angels, in a weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Whether the Dodgers' bullpen can restore its composure after such a deflating defeat remains the pressing question. Scott, in particular, will seek redemption. In the spectacle of American sport, as in the broader contests of nations, the margin between triumph and collapse is often measured in moments. The difference lies in what endures beyond them.
